Council Member Yusef Salaam inquires about the NYPD's use of traffic stat meetings to respond to collision patterns and revise enforcement strategies. Chief of Transportation Olufunmilola "Lola" Obe explains the NYPD's data-driven approach to traffic enforcement.

  • Traffic stat meetings are weekly sessions modeled after CompStat, bringing together NYPD executives, precinct leadership, and other agencies like TLC and DOT.
  • These meetings involve ongoing reviews of summons activity, collision trends, and fatalities to inform local deployment strategies.
  • Analysis is typically done over 28-day or 56-day periods, as well as year-to-date and historical reviews, to identify shifts in collision patterns and support seasonal adjustments in deployment.

According to the mayor's management report, the NYPD's chief of transportation collaborates with precinct executive officers to evaluate traffic patterns and enforce strategies at weekly traffic stat meetings.

How does the NYPD use traffic stat meetings to assist and respond to emerging collision patterns?
0:34:36
And how often does the NYPD revise its enforcement strategy based on real time or monthly traffic injury data?
Olufunmilola "Lola" Obe
0:34:47
So we do conduct extensive quantitative analysis of traffic enforcement through traffic stat like you mentioned.
0:34:54
So traffic stat is weekly, is a weekly data driven session modeled very closely after a comp stat that everyone's very familiar with.
0:35:02
This sessions bring together NYPD executives, precinct leadership, and agencies such as TLC, the DOT in one room ensuring that all partners are working in coordination to address again the three e's.

At the local precinct and patrol borough levels, we have our borough executives and precinct exos expected to conduct ongoing reviews of summons activity, collision trends, fatalities to inform local deployment strategies.
0:35:28
These analysis support real time decision making and long term planning.
0:35:32
So for instance, I talked about the 15 corridors with ultra focused on that.
0:35:38
For commands that fall, again outside of that, they have to designate locations that where they have their worst or their highest KSI's.
0:35:46
So with with traffic stat, we look at our reviews are typically done over a twenty eight day or fifty six day review and also year to date review as well as anything that's historic over over that time.
0:36:01
And these reviews really identify shifts in collision patterns.
0:36:05
They help us with, again, with enforcement strategies and also support seasonal adjustments in deployment.
0:36:10
We know in the cold colder weathers for the most part, we have certain trends and, you know, as opposed to the warm weather.
0:36:18
So borough level traffic teams also use these intervals to assess precinct level performance and drive follow-up.
0:36:24
So that's that's what I would say about traffic stat.
