Council Member Gutiérrez inquires about potential gaps in fiber infrastructure coverage, referencing previous testimony. Brett Sikoff explains the current state of broadband infrastructure in the city.

  • Gutiérrez asks if there were any identified places where fiber infrastructure was missing
  • Sikoff states that nearly the entire city is covered with some form of broadband infrastructure, though not necessarily fiber everywhere
  • He mentions that the city is working towards expanding fiber coverage through initiatives like making information services franchise available at low cost to small providers

And in 2022, mister Sykoffee testified before this committee that there was duplication in fiber infrastructure compared with the plan.

Were there any places you identified that fiber infrastructure was missing?
Brett Sikoff
1:46:37
Fiber infrastructure was missing?
1:46:39
I don't believe so.
1:46:40
Mean, that goes to the point earlier that I mentioned that nearly the entire city is covered, maybe not with fiber, but with coax or a hybrid of broadband infrastructure that's necessary.
1:46:51
So we'd be hard pressed to identify the locations where there's no broadband infrastructure.
1:46:59
There may not be fiber everywhere, but that's something that we're ultimately trying to get to by making our information services franchise available at extremely low cost to small providers.
1:47:12
Not sure if you're aware, but we do encourage small providers or incentivize them to build out in the city by deferring payments for five years when they build out outside of the core of Manhattan.
