Council Member Riley provides historical context for the Western and Eastern Rail Yards development. He explains the rezoning efforts and the current state of development for both sites.
- In 2005, the city established the special Hudson Yard district and rezoned the Eastern Rail Yard.
- In 2009, the Western Rail Yard was rezoned with the objective of creating a mixed-use residential area with less density than the eastern portion.
- The Eastern Rail Yard was developed with a 7,000,000 square foot mixed-use development completed in 2019.
- Despite the 2009 rezoning, the Western Rail Yard has not been developed to date.
