Council Member Sanchez inquires about how the appropriate number of vending licenses should be determined, seeking input from DCWP and the Department of Health.

  • DCWP emphasizes the importance of considering input from all stakeholders, including street vendors and brick-and-mortar establishments
  • The current waitlist of 10,500 general vendors is mentioned as a potential metric
  • DCWP notes that increasing licenses would require new resources and potentially generate revenue for the city
  • The agency stresses that they are still in the process of determining the right number of licenses for the city

And for DCWP and for Department of Health, how

you think the number of licenses should be determined?
1:17:50
Or will you leave that to us?

do

I think for me it's important to consider that this hearing as being kind of one of the first steps in the legislative process and really hearing from stakeholders, street vendors themselves, but also brick and mortar establishment representatives.
1:18:07
I think they also have concerns.
1:18:08
I think there are two sides to that issue that we need to be married.
1:18:13
Certainly, you know, taking taking as a as a as a perhaps a metric, the wait list of general vendors of 10,500, that is that is a number that would certainly require us over a period of time to need new resources to develop that.
1:18:29
I know we submitted an FIS to the council for 23 lines.
1:18:33
And on the flip side, there would be potential revenue for the city too in terms of just basic license fees.
1:18:38
But again, to to answer your original question, I think it's really we're in this process now of determining what the right number is for the city.
