Deputy Commissioner Licata explains how DEP considers co-benefits, such as urban heat reduction, when selecting green infrastructure for stormwater management.

  • Rain gardens with trees or vegetation are used to achieve cooling effects
  • Green roofs are incorporated into schoolyard projects with underground storage tanks
  • Despite maintenance challenges, DEP promotes green elements where possible to achieve desired cooling effects

Continuing our lightning round.

Does DEP consider co benefits when selecting green infrastructure for storm water management such as urban heat reduction?
Angela Licata
2:14:24
Right.
2:14:25
So that is most related to when we're doing the green infrastructure, such as a rain garden where we would have a tree or vegetation, and some of the schoolyard projects where we've been able to develop some of the green roofs associated with the development of underground storage tanks.
2:14:48
So we need to have that green element mainly to achieve the cooling effect that we desire.
2:14:54
And that's why even though those are the hardest to maintain, we still try to promote that where it's possible for that type of agitation to thrive to be supported by our maintenance.
