Justin Green, Executive Director of Big Reuse, testified about the importance of community composting programs and their impact on New York City. He highlighted the achievements of Big Reuse and urged continued support for community composting initiatives alongside the curbside composting rollout.
- Big Reuse opened 30 food scrap drop-offs across multiple boroughs and designed rat-proof compost cubes for community gardens.
- They reopened two mid-scale composting facilities, delivered compost to schools, supported street tree care, and trained master composters.
- Green emphasized that community composting builds community, improves soil, and educates New Yorkers about the value of composting in tangible ways.

I'm also part of the network with Domingo and Rhonda, the community composting network that spans the city with environmental groups.

And some of the work that Big Reefs does is with the funding from last year, we had opened 30 food scrap drop offs across Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Roosevelt Island.

We worked with a designer to manufacture and design rat proof compost cubes that we're installing in community gardens across the city.

We're reopening two mid scale composting facility, one in Gowanus, One in Central Park.

We delivered compost to over 75 schools and helped promote use of compost in parks and gardens, trained master composters in Brooklyn, had 150 outreach and community events, supported care for street trees, 1,000 street trees with 2,000 volunteers, and help support composters at Bronx River Alliance and Gowanus Canal Conservancy.

The funding supports work and an approach to composting that builds community, that improves New York City soil and does a lot more in addition to the curbside.

So it's important for as we roll out curbside to keep supporting community composting to educate New Yorkers.

And so many New Yorkers have no idea about the value of composting and our work demonstrates that in really tangible ways that people can get their hands dirty seeing.
