Council Member Carr and DOT officials discuss the challenges and efforts in coordinating with utility companies to minimize unnecessary road cuts, especially on newly paved streets.

  • DOT works closely with utility companies to prevent cuts in protected roads
  • The department scrutinizes emergency permit applications to ensure work is not done within the protection window
  • Monthly meetings are held with utility companies to discuss upcoming work and coordinate efforts
  • Carr suggests that utility companies need to improve their coordination efforts

And my last question is about coordinating with the utility companies' emergency cuts.
1:17:44
I know our borrowed teams do their best to work with the Con Ed and others to make sure that we're not cutting into our protected roads.
1:17:51
And sometimes those best efforts fail because the utility companies don't take advantage of the great lead time they have between milling and paving.
1:17:59
Do you tracking internally the number of utility cuts that are being applied for on an emergency basis now as compared to prior fiscal years?
1:18:09
Are we seeing improvements on the grander scale?
1:18:43
Appreciate it.
1:18:44
I know the department's doing all it can.
1:18:45
I think we just have to force our friends in the other side to do a little bit better on their side.
1:18:50
Thank you, chairs.

Listen, we agree with you and we are all over that.
1:18:16
We hate nothing more than one of our beautiful new streets being cut into unnecessarily.
1:18:22
So we continue all of the efforts that we've done in terms of calling in utility companies if we see that there's a problem with them, meeting with them monthly so we're very clear on the upcoming work.
1:18:33
And any time they apply for a permit, if it's an emergency permit or not, we scrutinize that to make sure that that work is not done within the protection window.
