Council Member Linda Lee inquires about the Parks Department's capacity to use design-build approaches to shorten timelines and save money on projects. Commissioner Sue Donoghue confirms that they are actively working with the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) to implement design-build methodologies.

  • Several new recreation centers are using the design-build approach
  • The department is planning a pilot program for design-build of five or six public restrooms
  • The goal is to speed up the capital process delivery for various projects

In terms of the time it takes for the parks projects to happen, and I think I may have asked this in a previous hearing, so forgive me for forgetting what the response was, but has I know that some of the city projects have been looking more into design build, but is that something that Parks Department has capacity to also look into in terms of shortening and saving money timeline wise?
Sue Donoghue
4:16:22
Absolutely.
4:16:23
We are working closely with DDC on a number of projects that are using the design build methodology.
4:16:30
So a number of our new rec centers are design build.
4:16:34
We are also working with DDC in order.
4:16:39
As I said, we are looking at all different ways that we can speed up the renovation or construction of public restrooms.
4:16:48
We are going to do a design build package of five or six public restrooms to pilot that.
4:16:55
So yes, we are working very closely and hand in hand with our sister agencies to see how we can incorporate that as another methodology for speeding up the capital process delivery.
