Brent Bovenzi, an organizer for Berry Open Street in North Brooklyn, testified in favor of fully funding the Open Streets program. He emphasized the importance of Open Streets as quick-to-implement open spaces in neighborhoods, similar to parks.

  • Current funding of $20,000 per year for 19 blocks of Berry Street is insufficient to create the open spaces that neighborhoods deserve.
  • There are delays in receiving funds for the Open Streets program.
  • Bovenzi urged the City Council to fully fund Open Streets in the budget.

Hi there.
5:51:25
Yes.
5:51:26
Thank you for having me.
5:51:27
My my name is Brent Birenzi.
5:51:29
I am one of the organizers for Open Streets in North Brooklyn, primarily Barrie Open Street.
5:51:35
And I just wanted to testify in favor of fully funding OpenStreet.
5:51:39
There's been lots of talk today about how critical parks are as open space and OpenStreet are another version of how we add OpenStreet to a neighborhood and very quickly.
5:51:51
Yet right now the budget is nowhere near enough to run these programs.
5:51:57
We're oftentimes super delayed on getting funds and even then 20 ks max a year for something like 19 blocks of what Berry Street is, it is completely insufficient to make these spaces, the open spaces that neighborhoods deserve.
5:52:14
So yes, I hope in the again, hope in the budget that city council will give will fully fund open streets.
5:52:22
Thank you.
