DOT officials discuss updates to speed camera technology, the selection of a new vendor, and potential legislative changes to enhance enforcement capabilities.

  • A new vendor (Vera) has been selected for the speed camera program, pending final negotiations
  • The new contract allows for flexibility in adopting new technologies
  • DOT is seeking amendments to increase data sharing with the state to combat obstructed license plates
  • An Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) program is being supported, which would require GPS technology in vehicles of worst offenders

0:41:45
Yeah.
0:41:45
Thanks, Commissioner.
0:41:46
We're very excited about this new contract.
0:41:48
This is the first time that the automated enforcement program gets RFP ed out.
0:41:53
If you recall, the program grew from a small pilot to just what it was now.
0:42:00
The agency never really put out an RFP to one, make sure that the contract terms made sense for the agency and two, see what new technologies were out there.
0:42:12
I think as the commissioner mentioned, this new contract structured in a way that if something, if a new technology comes in, we can quickly pivot to it.
0:42:22
So we're very excited.
0:42:23
I do want to point, make a point about the revenue.
0:42:26
I think you're perhaps right about the revenue.
0:42:29
I think the way we see automated enforcement is about behavior change.
0:42:33
And if these folks are not getting tickets then they're likely not going to see the behavior change which is ultimately what we want out of the automated enforcement program.
Justin Brannan
0:42:42
So with the new vendor or the renewal, is there talk about updating the technology in the cameras?
0:42:53
Just hit your Yeah.
0:44:37
Okay.
0:44:38
Sorry.
0:44:39
We've also been joined by council members Rivera, Salam, Ariola, and Sanchez.
0:44:43
I have a couple more, I want to interest of time, I'm gonna turn it over to Chair Brooks Powers.
0:44:47
Thank you.
Ydanis Rodriguez
0:42:51
Yes.
0:42:52
Have
0:42:55
So and I would like to for Rick also to add after I shared where we are today.
0:43:02
So as part of this process, we have an industry day where those were responding to the request for proposal.
0:43:10
They showcased everything that they had.
0:43:13
The current and new technology.
0:43:15
So I think that everyone including everyone who responded by including the one that being scoring higher, is the one that we, the agency is now in negotiation with details or the contract.
0:43:27
They are open to do new things.
0:43:32
But again, I'm more than happy to continue conversation with you guys.
0:43:37
However, we are restricted by the state on what more how can we use those images.
0:43:44
And and, Rick, I don't know if you'd to
Rick Rodriguez
0:43:46
Yeah.
0:43:46
Thank you, commissioner, and thank you, chair.
0:43:47
Just just just go half step backwards.
0:43:51
On the reauthorization of the speed camera bill, we're going to include some amendments to increase sharing with the state to combat obstructed license plates.
0:44:01
So that's a thing that you'll probably see in a Home Rule request soon.
0:44:05
An additional bill that we are also in support of in the legislature is the Intelligent Speed Assist program, which we've been calling ISA, which would have that sort of telematics technology.
0:44:19
So for those worst offenders of our speed and red light cameras, or if they have 11 points on their license, you would be required to have an installation of an ISA device.
0:44:29
And so we would have that GPS technology in the vehicles for those worst offenders.
