Council Member Justin Brannan inquires about the time it takes to hire new employees at HPD. Acting Commissioner Ahmed Tigani explains the variables that affect the hiring timeline.

  • Hiring timeline depends on funding source and whether the candidate is internal or external
  • Internal city service transfers can take a couple of months, considering the need to coordinate with other agencies
  • External hires from the private sector may have varying timelines based on the funding source
  • Some positions can be filled in a couple of months, while others may take much longer

What's the approximate time for I apply for a job at HPD, you hire me, how long until my first day at work?
Ahmed Tigani
0:27:23
I think it depends on the funding source.
0:27:25
So if it's something we're not subject to particular hiring procedures, it could be a couple of months and then it depends on whether you are coming new from outside city service or internal city service.
0:27:38
If you're internal city service often we're also working with the other agency to come up with a release date that makes sense and doesn't impair their work and allows them to come over here.
0:27:46
If it's someone who's coming from outside private sector into the public sector it really just depends on the funding source to tell us how long it would take.
0:27:56
We could have something that's a couple of months.
0:27:58
Some positions do wait a much longer time.
