Council Member Eric Dinowitz inquires about CUNY's plans to hire a dedicated Title VI coordinator. Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez explains CUNY's approach to managing Title VI needs and coordination.

  • A new center has been created to centralize Title VI work for consistency
  • Specific staff in the center will be assigned to each campus
  • CUNY is determining whether to designate a central office staff member or a campus-based individual as the Title VI coordinator
  • Legislation in Albany proposing mandatory Title VI coordinators is supported by CUNY

In previous preliminary budget responses and across the country we're seeing colleges hire a dedicated Title six coordinator.

What discussions have been had at CUNY to hire a person who is in charge dedicated to coordinating and managing all of the title six needs including these trainings?

So some of those things will be handled by the new center that we created.
1:26:06
Right?
1:26:06
One of the recommendations going back to how you began your question with the Libman Report was about centralizing a lot of this work so there would be more consistency.
1:26:16
So there can be better outreach and all those things.
1:26:20
So some of that Title VI coordination would be done by the center.
1:26:24
There'd be specific staff in the center assigned to each campus.
1:26:28
Right?
1:26:30
And I know there's also legislation being proposed in Albany about making this mandatory which we have supported.
1:26:36
So we were sort of to figure out whether in our case to do something like that it'll be the personnel that is in the central office who is responsible for the campus who will get a designation such as that one.
1:26:48
Or it'd be somebody who's physically on the campus.
1:26:51
So, that is something that we are determining as we build the center and we we do the way that that infrastructure is created.
