Commissioner Park provides an overview of the current state of homelessness in New York City and the shelter system's capacity.
- As of May 2, the overall DHS census was 85,615 people, an increase of 42,000 since early 2022
- Nearly 70% of shelter residents are families (59,000 people)
- Children make up 37% of all people in the shelter system
- Breakdown of shelter population:
- 31,741 children
- 27,453 adult parents and caregivers
- 16,000 single adult men
- 5,700 single adult women
- 4,600 adult families
- More than 75% of the new arrival population (asylum seekers) are housed in the DHS shelter system

As of May 2, the overall DHS census was 85,615 people, an increase of 42,000 people since the beginning of 2022 before the surge in the special population asylum seekers to New York City.

Of the 85,000, approximately 59,000 people, almost 70% are families made up of children, 31,741 people in that sort of fuchsia section there, and their adult parents and caregivers, twenty seven thousand four hundred and fifty three people in light blue.

In other words, children make up 37% or more than a third of all people in the shelter system.

The remaining population is made up of single adult men, just over 16,000 in dark blue single adult women, about 5,700 in orange and adult families, about 4,600 in green.

And more than 75% of the new arrival population, the asylum seekers, are currently housed in the DHS shelter system.
