Council Member Rita Joseph inquires about the costs of Carter cases and DOE autism programs. DOE representatives provide cost comparisons and explain the potential benefits of investing in specialized programs.

  • The average cost for a standard private school autism program is around $150,000 per student per year
  • Carter tuition cases range from $175,000 to $210,000 per pupil
  • DOE's specialized programs, particularly the AIMS program, cost about $66,000 per pupil
  • Investing in specialized programs could help reduce Carter cases and associated costs

what does that average cost look like?
2:44:14
Give me a number.
Liz Vladek
2:44:15
We're working that out because as you know the numbers roll in over However, I feel comfortable ballparking tuition at a standard private school autism program at around $150,000 per student.
Rita Joseph

Per year as
Liz Vladek
2:44:29
well.
2:44:30
Per year, yes.
2:44:32
And so the more we are able to invest in our public school autism programs, the more of those Carter cases we can successfully defend, which is to say get up in a hearing and say we have offered a more than adequate placement and should not be required

that tuition.
Rita Joseph
2:44:48
And we're looking at the model, right, the NEST program as the graduation rate is so high we need to duplicate more of that, so that should go hand in hand with reducing our courses, correct?
Christina Foti
2:44:59
Thank you, Terry.
2:45:00
Exactly.
2:45:00
You know and I brought those numbers with me.
2:45:02
Carter tuition cases per pupil range from 175 to $2.10, 2 hundred and 10 thousand.
2:45:10
Our specialized programs, particularly our AIMS program, which is our most competitive program, to our Carter cases is 66,000.
2:45:19
So just want to reiterate my point earlier.
2:45:22
If we can do a short term investment in creating these specialized programs, that will be our biggest competitor to Carter cases.
2:45:29
Parents want these programs.
2:45:31
We had 2,200 families apply to AIMS that were viding for two eighty eight seats.
2:45:39
If we can begin a concerted effort to create these programs, parents will come and we will see those numbers decrease the same way as when we built IESP services in house, we see a 30% decrease in due process complaints.
