Council Member Justin Brannan inquires about the status of the safe passages pilot program, which was a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice and DOE aimed at reducing violence around schools. Mark Rampersant, Chief of Safety at DOE, explains that the program has been transferred to DYCD and is now called the YES model, with changes in funding allocation.

  • The program was originally implemented in schools in Coney Island but funding was discontinued.
  • DYCD now manages the program with a different funding structure: fewer schools receive funding, but each school gets more money.
  • Brannan indicates he will follow up with DYCD for more information on the changes.

I have a question about the safe passages pilot.
3:00:41
So it was a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice and DOE.
3:00:46
I thought it was a great program aimed to reduce violence before, during, and after the school day.
3:00:51
There were a bunch of schools in Coney Island that were receiving safe passage funding, but then they were informed, they informed us that the funding was no longer available.
3:01:01
So was safe passages discontinued citywide or was it handed over to DYCD?
Rita Joseph
3:01:07
Good afternoon.
Justin Brannan
3:01:08
How are you, sir?
Mark Rampersant
3:01:09
Mark Rampercent, chief of safety prevention coordinator.
Justin Brannan
3:01:12
I've heard of you.
Mark Rampersant
3:01:12
Have you?
3:01:13
So the the program that you are talking about is currently under DYCD.
Justin Brannan
3:01:20
Okay.
Mark Rampersant
3:01:21
It is now the YES model.
3:01:24
And so the way by which they disseminated funding is a little different this year.
3:01:29
I don't want to talk about another agency's, you know, funding stream or allocation, but they did a little different.
3:01:36
So it was less schools, but more money to schools.
Justin Brannan
3:01:40
Okay.
3:01:41
Alright.
3:01:41
I'll take it up with them.
