DOE officials discuss current and future plans for co-op models and work-based learning opportunities in New York City public schools, emphasizing customization and various programs in place.

  • The Future Ready approach includes customization of programs
  • Some schools are already using co-op models, particularly in education pathways
  • There's a focus on allowing students to explore careers in education through teacher assisting and other functions
  • Work-based learning opportunities are being expanded, with some unpaid experiences eligible for credit
  • Apprenticeship programs are in place, including partnerships with city agencies
  • The DOE is planning to work with schools and superintendents to increase accessibility of work-based learning opportunities

Let's see if our pathways team wants wants to respond, but, you know, with the part of what's baked into our future ready approach is customization.
Rita Joseph
3:49:00
Right.
Daniel Weisberg
3:49:01
So, you know, so it wouldn't surprise me if if we have some of those models at play right now.
3:49:09
And, you know, it's gonna be driven by both student engagement and need, but also what's effective in making them college and career ready.
Mark Rampersant
3:49:20
Melanie, do
Justin Brannan
3:49:20
wanna add to that?
Melanie Mac
3:49:22
I'll just add to to what the first deputy chancellor shared.
3:49:25
Thank you, chair.
3:49:27
So a number of our education pathways and future ready in particular are exploring using the co op model.
3:49:33
Not exclusively there but we are definitely seeing a lot of that where students are exploring education pathway, they're beginning to do teacher assisting and supporting in different functions in the school.
3:49:44
So we're gonna continue to focus on the ways that we can allow our students to see themselves potentially working in the field of education across New York City public schools.
3:49:56
And one of the ways that we'll focus this summer we'll be planning with high schools, be planning with superintendents, and thinking about the ways work based learning opportunities become more and more accessible because we also know that unpaid work experiences can count for credit if they meet specific standards.
3:50:15
We know that this is something that is gonna continue to evolve as we look at state graduation requirements.
3:50:21
So we're really excited about the ways we already have a lot of innovation across our schools and we'll spend some time planning with our schools and districts about how we continue to build on internship opportunities including those that are homegrown and happening at the school level.
3:50:35
And obviously you heard from council member Stevens too there are models like our apprenticeship work where students are spending half and half of the week either in their school building or at their apprenticeship site including in our own office.
3:50:47
We host four apprentices who spend twenty hours a week with us.
3:50:51
They arrive in the afternoon.
3:50:53
They have a full set of work assignments as well as a number of my other central colleagues here and colleagues across city agencies.
3:51:00
So we're continuing to build on that notion that there are strong work based learning rigorous opportunities that are available in the school system and in city agencies.
Rita Joseph
3:51:11
Thank you for that.
3:51:11
I think council member Brennan has a couple of follow
Justin Brannan
3:51:14
ups.
