Council Member Justin Brannan inquires about how the DOE can better hold principals accountable for compliance with arts education requirements. Paul Thompson explains the strategies in place.

  • The DOE developed a principal fellows program to work directly with principals
  • The program aims to put arts at the core of schools' instructional missions
  • DOE works with superintendents to ensure principals meet state mandates for arts education at elementary, middle, and high school levels

And how can DOE better hold principals accountable for being in compliance for arts education?
Paul Thompson
2:37:32
That's a good question.
2:37:34
Our office early on developed a strategy for supporting principals specifically since principals really are the folks responsible for controlling budgets, hiring teachers.
2:37:46
And so we developed the principal fellows program where we partner direct with teachers to ensure I'm sorry, with principals to ensure that they're putting the arts in the core of their school's instructional mission.
2:37:59
We also continue to work with all of the superintendents who ensure that all of the principals are meeting the state mandates that are set for the arts.
2:38:08
So that's in elementary school meeting those mandates, in middle school meeting those mandates, and in high school meeting those mandates.
Justin Brannan

Okay.
2:38:17
Thank you very much.
Paul Thompson

Thank you.
