Council Member Hanif inquires about new initiatives for food education, gardening programs, and partnerships with local farms to ensure students are eating healthy foods. Deputy Chancellor Vadehra outlines the DOE's efforts in this area.

  • The DOE has prioritized both serving healthier food options and educating students about nutrition
  • 200 schools have received funding to create nutrition collaboratives
  • These collaboratives focus on food education at the school level and work with community partners
  • The initiative is supported by $20 million in funding from the city council

Understood.
1:52:31
And we know that SCA owes us a lot of projects, and I hope that the class size program is something that they prioritize.
1:52:44
It's great to know about the $6,000,000,000.
1:52:47
Wanna make sure that this law is being followed through equitably.
1:52:53
I want I've I wanna end by asking about food education, gardening programs, partnerships with local farms.
1:53:03
I loved that seeds in the middle I was here and hearing from young people talk about healthy foods.
1:53:11
I was at a school in my own district trying pesto pasta that was made, not made with the actual ingredients, but alternative ingredients for a healthier meal.
1:53:26
I'd like to know what are new initiatives and how else are we ensuring that healthy foods are what our children are eating?
Emma Vadehra
1:53:40
I thought pesto pasta was a pretty healthy meal, so now I'm feeling bad about my own decisions.
1:53:46
So as you know, healthy food and then food education is a part of that.
1:53:51
Right?
1:53:51
How do we make sure just we're not just serving healthier food and different food options, but that students are aware of why and what's important and their own nutritional needs has been a priority for this administration.
1:54:05
I would say one of the biggest things we've done over the past few years is created nutrition collaboratives at schools.
1:54:12
So we have 200 schools that receive funding in part thanks to the 20,000,000 we received thanks to council in the past that use that funding to do food education at the school level to learn more about what's going on and why and also do work in their communities partners.
1:54:29
So that's sort of the big thing we've done that we are continuing to expand going forward looking ahead.
