Emma Vadehra and Chancellor Aviles-Ramos explain the process of allocating funding to schools for class size reduction, including outreach efforts, application review, and prioritization criteria.
- Extensive outreach and training provided to schools about the application process
- Nearly 800 schools applied, with about 750 receiving funding
- Funding prioritized based on need and clear plans for improving class size compliance
- Joint review of applications by DOE, UFT, and CSA

Yeah.
1:23:41
We we did a

lot of outreach with our partners in the division of school leadership and trainings working through our budget directors and our HR folks.
1:23:49
We developed this whole program in partnership with UFT and CSA start to finish, so they did a lot of outreach as well.
1:23:56
And we did both joint trainings and individual trainings on the program, how to apply the timeline, and gave folks a couple of months to do it.
1:24:05
We saw close to 800 schools apply.
1:24:09
We funded roughly seven fifty of them.
1:24:13
So we funded almost all the schools that applied and that's how we got to that 3,700 teacher numbers.
1:24:19
In addition to the 3,700 teachers, schools could apply for funds for other things as well, which they did.
1:24:24
Teachers are obviously the big thing here, but we funded about 100 additional assistant principals to help support those teachers.
1:24:32
Schools could come in and ask for room conversions to turn space, as the chancellor said, into a classroom.
1:24:37
We're funding some of projects as well.
1:24:40
So that's overall what the pool looked like.
1:24:43
And generally we prioritized high need, but I would say we wanted to make sure the funding was clearly going to be used to improve class size compliance.
1:24:53
We certainly got some requests that were not actually related to that.
1:24:57
We wanted to make sure we understood how it would improve class size compliance.
1:25:01
We did look at E and I, but as I mentioned, the applications trended the other way and we did fund almost all

of them at that point.
Emma Vadehra
1:25:08
And so that's sort of the joint criteria we looked at.
1:25:11
We, UFT, and CSA actually all applied, all reviewed all of the applications together, and so the decisions reflected those joint feedback.
