Good afternoon, honorable chair Joseph and New York City Council Members.
6:41:27
My name is Chaunce Young and I'm a Bronx parent living in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx and the director of the new seven month parent action committee.
6:41:33
As as Branza mentioned, we're a member of many organizations, including all that you mentioned and also the coalition for equitable, education funding.
6:41:43
Our members are extremely concerned about the state of New York City public schools and are advocating for equitable funding both here in the city and we also advocate at the state level with some frustration as the situation that we landed on the state level in terms of funding.
6:42:01
Now New York City is put in a position where we need to invest more in our cities and in our schools and our families and invest we need them to invest in social emotional support for our students and families.
6:42:14
Students and families need trauma responsive care and culture responsive healing centered practices.
6:42:20
Our schools need to be provided with support and guidance to help develop trauma responsive healing centered schools.
6:42:28
We also need to address that New York City is a sanctuary city and that our city should be safe and sanctuary for our immigrant families and not cooperate with ICE.
6:42:41
It is an outrage that New York City's higher education institutions have not been sanctuaries for students as we've seen at Columbia and NYU.
6:42:51
These institutions have opened their doors to ICE and have disciplined and expelled student activists.
6:42:57
We hope with the support and guidance of New York City Council the public schools will remain safe space for all students regardless of their immigration status.
6:43:07
We should be investing in our future not furthering the cradle to prison pipeline.
6:43:12
New York City continues to undermine restorative justice, a program that could use additional funding to train young adults to be school based restorative justice coordinators.
6:43:24
We also joined the coalition calling for the city to restore $3,300,000 in student success funders and baseline funding for summer program, learning to work, and restorative justice.
6:43:39
Thank you.
