Council Member Yusef Salaam raises concerns about soil tests and the site's history as a gas station. Environmental consultant Lynn Do explains the site remediation process under the Brownfield Cleanup Program.

  • The site is undergoing the Brownfield Cleanup Program under state DEC jurisdiction.
  • High level of remediation is required for residential use, ensuring the site will be clean and suitable for residents and visitors.
  • All contaminated soil will be removed from the site, and groundwater and soil testing will meet DEC requirements.

So while we have you, there's been great discussion as well about the soil tests, the fact that this was this is in fact the site where a gas station was located.

And so part of the question part of the response rather that I'm really trying to get at is in response to that, the soil, the effects that are happening now in the world as as it relates to the world heating up, global things happening, all of that stuff, you know, as we begin to look at this project and move in a direction that allows for this to be built, that question in terms of that study is really relating to that and all of the things involved at that space in particular.

Not just the small park areas, but more so building on that site, the ground, the soil, all of that.

Yes.

Well, I'm gonna answer it in different parts because they touch on different elements of the environmental review.

of the disclosure, we did look at what the effects are in the open space.
0:54:13
We did look at what is going on with construction.
0:54:16
We also looked at what is going on in terms of the site remediation.
0:54:21
As Bruce had mentioned, the site is undergoing the Brown Field Cleanup Program under the state DEC jurisdiction.
0:54:33
As part of that, there are particular cleanup levels that the site must achieve, and because we're putting residential on there, it is a high level of remediation so that by the time the remediation under the Brownfield Cleanup Program is completed, the site will be very clean, and it will be suitable for residences, it will be suitable for visitors to the site.
0:55:02
All of that soil will be taken off the site, and we'll make sure that the testing for the groundwater and soil is appropriate for DEC requirements.
