William Allen, a lifelong Harlem resident and member of Community Board 10, strongly supports the One Forty Five for Harlem project. He believes the development will address the housing crisis in Central Harlem by creating about a thousand new homes for people across all income levels.

  • Allen emphasizes the project's amenities, including a tech innovation center, space for local community groups, and publicly accessible open areas.
  • He mentions a robust community agreement that will benefit the community.
  • Allen states that while everyone agrees there's a housing problem in Harlem, there's disagreement about the solution, and he sees this project as a positive solution.

My good afternoon, everybody.
1:46:13
My name is William Allen.
1:46:14
Let me thank the council members and certainly all the public that's participating and the staff that's present.
1:46:20
I'm a lifelong resident of Harlem, where I currently reside.
1:46:25
I'm also a member of community board ten and a duly elected democratic district leader.
1:46:29
And both of those capacity, I'm not speaking today, I'm speaking as clearly as an individual.
1:46:34
And I would just wanna thank you for this opportunity to offer my perspective about an enormously important project in Harlem that I strongly support.
1:46:42
I'm deeply involved in community affairs, civic life, political process and business, activities in Harlem.
1:46:49
I, know my community and its residents very well.
1:46:52
Therefore, I can safely say that I am in perfect position to offer my insights about the one four five project.
1:46:58
I'm here today speaking for myself as I indicated, but I'm confident that my perspective is shared by the majority of folks in Harlem who understand what one four five is all about.
1:47:07
It is no secret that there's an enormous housing crisis in New York City, but essentially in Central Harlem, which is making it increasingly challenging to live here.
1:47:16
So let me focus on my neighborhood.
1:47:19
Young people just starting out can't afford to, afford a decent apartment even if they can find one.
1:47:26
Other folks on a fixed income are being squeezed out.
1:47:30
Couples who are building a family are choosing to leave Harlem because they are better choices out for and that for many of us is out of the state of New York.
1:47:38
Just about everyone I know is paying too much of their disposable income or rent for apartments that are rundown or otherwise don't meet their needs.
1:47:47
Everyone everyone agrees that there is a problem, but there is a disagreement about the solution.
1:47:53
Welcome to one four five.
1:47:56
Here we have a world class architect that designed a magnificent building that will create about a thousand new homes for people at all parts of the income spectrum.
