Council Member Justin Brannan inquires about the progress of Know Your Rights workshops organized by the Immigrant Rights Collaborative. Deputy Commissioner Lorena Lucero provides an update on the number of workshops completed and their distribution across different settings.

  • 80 trainings left to reach the goal of 240 workshops
  • 52 trainings in shelters, 47 in schools, and 14 in faith-based institutions
  • Workshops shifted from in-person to online due to declining attendance
Justin Brannan
2:28:18
Thank you, commissioner.
2:28:19
I've also been joined by council member De La Rosa.
2:28:23
There's a couple of questions for me and then I want to really turn it over to the chair.
2:28:28
During the preliminary budget hearing, you stated that the Immigrant Rights Collaborative was planning an additional Know Your Rights workshops in schools and had a goal of completing two forty workshops.
2:28:42
Could you tell us if we've met that goal or how we're looking?
Lorena Lucero
2:28:48
Yes.
2:28:49
We have not met that goal but we are on our way.
2:28:52
We currently have about 80 trainings left.
Justin Brannan
2:28:55
Okay.
2:28:57
And could you give us an idea of how the the borough equity shakes out there?
2:29:01
How many are happening in each borough?
2:29:03
Are you trying to do an equal amount in each borough?
Lorena Lucero
2:29:06
So I don't have the borough breakdown but I can tell you that the way that it was designed it was to prioritize folks who were in shelters, schools, and faith based institutions and I do have the breakdown there if you want that.
Justin Brannan
2:29:21
Yeah that'd be great.
Lorena Lucero
2:29:23
So in shelters, we've done about 52 trainings so far.
2:29:29
In schools, we've done 47 and then 14 have been at faith based institutions.
Justin Brannan
2:29:39
And has the the cruelty and chaos coming from Washington impacted attendance at these workshops better or worse or?
Lorena Lucero
2:29:50
I think there's been several things that have impacted attendance but I can say that there has been when we first started the workshops there were more people coming.
2:30:01
Because of that we had to pivot.
2:30:03
So instead of doing in person, we had to move to doing them online to meet the low decline in numbers.
