Commissioner Dr. Lisette Nieves emphasizes the significance of recent housing policy changes as a critical opportunity for the commission's work.

Drawing on her background leading the Fund for the City of New York and her personal roots in Brooklyn, she highlights the Fund's research on the true cost of living and asylum seekers. Dr. Nieves commits to a transparent process focused on listening to and representing all New Yorkers, including her own family still residing in the city.

0:22:50
Thank you very much.
0:22:51
And, can I say Brooklynite?
0:22:53
Vespero?
0:22:54
Just wanna say that.
0:22:54
Hi, everyone.
0:22:55
My name is Lisa Nieves.
0:22:56
I'm really proud to be here.
0:22:59
And, why I said yes to this challenge is because there is absolutely no question that this is the most significant policy change that has happened in decades in housing.
0:23:10
There is no question.
0:23:11
So I wanna thank both our mayor and our city council for that.
0:23:14
What we do with this is an important opportunity, and so I wanna be part of doing that.
0:23:19
Born and raised in New York, in Brooklyn.
0:23:22
I wanna say that.
0:23:23
Public schools all the way through higher ed.
0:23:25
I'm really proud of that and came part of the first generation of Puerto Ricans in the forties.
0:23:30
And so many generations of Puerto Ricans who are here, I'm part of that.
0:23:34
I'm really proud to be here in New York.
0:23:36
The thing that I believe that I'm gonna offer that may have been a major contribution is two things.
0:23:41
One thing at the fund is that we have housed for the last fifteen years along with Grace Bonilla is a true cost of living report talking about housing for a long time.
0:23:50
This is not something new.
0:23:52
And then the other thing is the most recent asylum seekers, report and evaluation on that.
0:23:58
And I think that's important for us to understand both of those.
0:24:02
I am here to listen.
0:24:03
I'm here to support a transparent process, but I'm also here to understand, that when we're talking about New Yorkers, we're talking about my sister, my brother, my cousin, my aunt, my uncle.
0:24:17
They're all still here, and, and we don't want them to be pushed out.
0:24:22
So with that said, thank you for the honor of sitting here, and, we're lucky to have you as our chair.
0:24:27
Thank you.
Richard R. Buery Jr.
0:24:27
Thank you.
0:24:28
Thank you, Yvette.
