Commissioner Anita Laremont asks Annemarie Gray for specifics on how the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) could incorporate housing needs. Gray suggests the LPC could evaluate the housing impact of new historic districts or decisions allowing consolidation of multiple apartments into single homes.

  • LPC could assess how designating new historic districts affects housing opportunity sites.
  • LPC could consider the loss of housing units when approving the combination of apartments into larger single residences within historic areas.

Anne Marie, a question about the landmarks issue.
1:50:40
How how do you envision that actually working?
1:50:43
Sort of what would landmarks really be considering relative to housing?
Annemarie Gray
1:50:47
Mhmm.
1:50:48
A couple of things that we put into the report, I'm really excited to talk about this more.
1:50:52
One, for example, they could work with other city agencies who already think and are required to think about the housing crisis in evaluating, the impact on a new historic district on housing sites, housing opportunity sites.
1:51:06
Same with, we've actually lost a hundred thousand units of housing over the last couple decades in consolidations of historic, you know, used to be 15 apartment buildings into one massive mansion.
1:51:20
They have not they're not actually evaluating the impact of that loss the loss of apartments and their decisions, and they should be required to do that.
