The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) and the Department for the Aging (DFTA) use training and the Elder Justice Program to support older adults experiencing abuse in New York City.

  • Both staff and clients undergo annual training to recognize and address different types of elder abuse.
  • The Elder Justice Program is recommended as the primary resource for older adults, providing referrals to Adult Protective Services (APS) or other services depending on the abuse's nature.
  • Available services include financial abuse intervention with banks and neglect cases referred to APS or NYPD.
  • Legal services providers offer assistance for abuse and neglect cases, further supporting the victims.

So how are Moria and DIFTA reaching older adults who may be ex experiencing abuse at home.
1:52:11
I know you talked about elder justice, but if you could just expand on that a bit more.
Anya Herasme
1:52:19
Sure.
1:52:20
So in addition to elder justice, one of our requirements of our programs, both for staff, and for clients is to do training annually on elder abuse.
1:52:30
And so there's a training that the staff required to take annually to be familiar with the signs.
1:52:37
Obviously, there's different types of abuse we think are aware of and how to help somebody if they are experiencing abuse.
1:52:43
And then also we do transport the older adults to also be aware whether it's for themselves or somebody they know.
Alexa Avilés
1:52:50
And if you could just briefly describe for an older immigrant adult who's experiencing abuse, what kinds of actual soap ports are available for them.
Anya Herasme
1:53:00
Sure.
1:53:00
So I think the best resource would be our elder justice program.
1:53:03
And so they, you know, depending on the case, they might refer to APS or other services.
1:53:09
There's different resources, again, depending on the type of abuse, how severe it is.
1:53:14
But that is available to all older New Yorkers.
1:53:16
We have different providers throughout the city who serve different catchment areas to support any older adult
Alexa Avilés
1:53:22
So, Julius, give us just 2 or 3 examples.
1:53:25
So what I'm looking forward to get on the record is for those listening in.
1:53:29
Mhmm.
1:53:29
Right?
1:53:29
They don't know what to imagine, what the the various services could be.
1:53:33
So if you could just say, like, these 5 services are available in particular, although the cases are obviously unique, and can be very different.
Anya Herasme
1:53:41
Sure.
1:53:42
So I think one of the big or I can talk about the types of abuses that we see like there's financial abuse, of course, so they might work with the you know, with the banks looking into the person's bank accounts checking, you know, maybe opening new accounts, closing accounts, things like that.
1:53:58
Is one way.
1:54:00
If there's neglect, usually, APS would be called to be because we don't have legal privileges with with our clients.
1:54:09
So that in those cases, we need to refer out or work with the NYPD.
Penney Vachiraprapun
1:54:13
Our legal services providers do also offer legal services for abusive neglect cases.
1:54:18
So sometimes our legal services providers do get involved in those kinds of cases as well.
