The Department of Education discusses efforts to replicate successful programs in under-enrolled schools to attract families and face challenges in altering parent preferences for certain prestigious schools.

  • Superintendents are currently engaging in efforts to leverage under-enrolled schools by duplicating successful programs.
  • Despite initiatives to promote less recognized but excellent school programs, parent preferences for prestigious schools remain a significant challenge.
  • The Department of Education, including the Chancellor, is actively working to highlight these programs through various channels, including social media.
  • Council Member Rita C. Joseph emphasizes the importance of publicizing successful yet under-recognized programs within the public school system, like the performing arts school in Brooklyn.

if we recreate that same program in another building that has the space, let's let's just just like council member Bruce said, let's think outside the box.
1:56:23
Right?
1:56:24
Okay.
1:56:24
We don't have the space.
1:56:25
Why don't we duplicate the same program in a nearby school?
Dan Weisberg
1:56:28
Yes.
1:56:28
So so these are the kind of things, and maybe Doctor Kirkland can talk about.
1:56:32
These are the kind of things that actually superintendents are doing now to to to and we've talked about this sum chair chair Joseph, You know, we do have some under enrolled schools, and these are the kind of things that superintendents are leaning into now.
1:56:44
How do we attract families right now into these schools?
1:56:47
But just again to to talk about real life.
1:56:51
As you know, there are certain schools that are just very, very popular, have a very powerful brand.
1:56:57
And even even if you open up a good program in another location, a lot of parents are still gonna say I really, really want my child to go to this particular school, and that's gonna be difficult.
1:57:08
But certainly, you're you're a 100% right.
1:57:10
That's exactly the kind of thing that that we would do in collaboration with our to bring tennis.
Khalek Kirkland
1:57:15
And the chancellor has been doing it.
1:57:17
The chancellor has been doing the Yulman's job.
Rita C. Joseph
1:57:18
The Hyatt PR person for the chancellor's today, and the Daniel Samay is trying to take your job.
Khalek Kirkland
1:57:23
Listen.
1:57:24
Nathaniel does a great job of finding us.
1:57:27
But the chancellor has been doing a great job of highlighting the other schools that that are doing great things beyond the Stavus And Ross High School of Science Brooklyn Tech.
1:57:40
So, yes, He's working behind the scenes to be able to highlight all of a social media going into these schools that have amazing programs so that if in fact we do need to do that, they would feel those parents would feel comfortable going to those schools.
Rita C. Joseph
1:57:54
And that's something the council has been pushing very hard on in chance of deputy chance that Weisberg knows that.
1:57:59
Mhmm.
1:58:00
We have, for example, you have the performing arts LaGuardia.
1:58:04
In Brooklyn, you have a performing arts where students have to On Dean Street, they have to audition as well to get into that school, and I and I told the chance that I'm not hearing about it.
1:58:14
It's like a big secret in Brooklyn.
1:58:16
Yeah.
1:58:16
But there's a performing arts school, and they do very, very well.
1:58:18
I was over there in district 15.
Dan Weisberg
1:58:20
Yeah.
Rita C. Joseph
1:58:20
And they're amazing.
1:58:21
I visited this school.
1:58:22
They put on them as a rival.
1:58:24
Mhmm.
1:58:25
I felt I was on Broadway.
1:58:26
Yeah.
1:58:26
So those are the programs I keep saying in all these little secrets inside of New York City public schools sell the public system.
Khalek Kirkland
1:58:33
But remember the comment that I said at the beginning about the the positive public praise, you're doing a great job by going to these schools and you have them all over your social media, where you are highlighting them as well.
1:58:46
So thank you for doing that.
Rita C. Joseph
1:58:47
I I just have a new PO person.
