The commissioner explains the city's plan to roll out large on-street containers for trash collection from high-density buildings.

  • Phase 1 will begin in Manhattan Community District 9 in one year
  • The city is procuring new automated trucks and containers for this program
  • After Manhattan 9, the plan is to expand containerization citywide
  • Smaller buildings will be required to use individual wheelie bins citywide starting this fall

Apologies if I missed this earlier, but I was just curious to know about the containerization pilot program and when that would be expanding and what the status is of funding for that program.
Jessica Tisch
1:55:40
Yeah.
1:55:41
We had a major investment in the executive budget from the city to fund, like, the proper European style rollout of large fixed on street containers for high density buildings.
1:55:57
Phase 1 will be in Manhattan 9.
1:56:00
And that is scheduled to start literally 1 year from today, and we're very excited about it.
1:56:08
In the meantime, like, there's a why 1 year from now?
1:56:10
There's a lot going on.
1:56:12
We unveiled our new automated siloed loader.
1:56:15
We're ordering more than a dozen of those trucks to service Manhattan 9.
1:56:22
We're also doing the procurement to buy the actual bins and to select the bins that we're going to be using and the servicing of of those those bins as as an example.
1:56:35
And so that procurement is ongoing.
1:56:38
The trucks are being made.
1:56:40
We plan to roll it out a year from now to every high rise building in Manhattan 9 as well as every school.
1:56:51
In the meantime, this fall all smaller buildings, 1 to 9 unit buildings will come under a requirement to put their trash in individual wheelie bins,
Joaquin Eleno

and
Jessica Tisch
1:57:02
that will be city wide requirement.
Sitra Bowman
1:57:03
So after Manhattan 9, what's the the subsequent
Jessica Tisch
1:57:07
The mayor has been clear he wants to to containerize all £24,000,000 of trash or or or 44,000,000 of trash that we produce in the city every day, but I don't have what's next district yet.
1:57:24
Okay.
