60 sec

Carolyn Iodice, speaking in her personal capacity, urges support for the City of Yes proposal without changes to allow more homes to be built across New York City. She shares her personal experience of living with roommates in an expensive apartment in Crown Heights, highlighting the need for more housing to give renters leverage against rising rents.

  • Iodice lives with two other adults over 30 in a 3-bedroom apartment, paying over $4000 a month without utilities
  • The rent has increased significantly from about $3500 two years ago
  • She argues that more homes will give renters more leverage against landlords raising rents

Hi.
9:43:32
My name is Carolyn Idis, and I'm speaking in my personal capacity.
9:43:37
I urge you to support city vests in full without any changes because it'll allow more homes to be built across the city.
9:43:44
I live with 2 other people in a 3 bedroom apartment in Crown Heights, and I love my roommates, but it's telling that the apartment is currently housing 3 unrelated adults over 30 instead of, say, the family.
9:43:59
The reason that this is happening is that the rent is over $4000 a month without utilities up from only up from about 35100 only 2 years ago.
9:44:10
And it's not a luxury building.
9:44:11
It was built a while ago, and it's nothing fancy, but its home.
9:44:16
Our rent is going up sharply because there are too few homes across the city, giving our landlord leverage to raise the rent.
9:44:23
More homes will give more leverage back to renters.
9:44:26
So please support City of Yes for housing opportunity without any changes.
9:44:30
Thank you.
