Council Member Restler raises concerns about non-profits and yeshivas facing challenges with the new containerization model. Commissioner Tisch clarifies the Department's stance and offers solutions for these institutions.
- Tisch emphasizes that schools are not required to use 55-gallon wheelie bins for their trash
- She explains that the Department of Education (DOE) schools use large tilt trucks that are more suitable for the amount of trash they produce
- Tisch recommends this model (large tilt trucks) for any school, including yeshivas, that approaches the Department with concerns
- Restler acknowledges the helpfulness of this information and commits to guiding concerned institutions in this direction

Thanks so much.

I'm concerned so nonprofits, some of my yeshivas, get lumped into the 1 to 9 residential units and therefore have had some challenges with the new containerization model.

Even they who love, you know, the in my in South Williamsburg, there's always a reticence to lose parking.
1:12:53
But I think even that community would be open to a tradeoff of, being able to have the contour bins on in their community as well.

Yeah.
1:13:03
Understood.
1:13:04
And I wanna be very clear that we by no means want or expect or require schools, any schools, public schools, private schools, parochial schools, we do not require them to use 55 gallon wheelie bins for their trash.
1:13:24
They produce lots of trash.
1:13:26
Yeah.
1:13:27
And so the option that, for example, the DOE schools have gone with are these quite large tilt trucks that our sanitation workers can operate.
1:13:38
They're much bigger than 55 gallons, but they're lower to the ground.
1:13:42
They're on wheels.
1:13:43
And that is, the model that DOE is using right now in this gap because they are required, to put their trash in containers, but they don't have the Empire Bins yet.
1:13:56
And so that is what I recommend to any school, and we've had a few yeshivas approach us, any yeshivas that approaches us about it.

That's very helpful.
