Good afternoon.
3:58:05
Thank you for holding this hearing.
3:58:08
My name is Angela d Wood, and I'm the deputy executive director of Carnegie East House, an assisted living community on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
3:58:17
We're the only nonprofit of our kind.
3:58:20
Our community means a lot to many New York families.
3:58:23
It matters that we stick around, but we have a grave problem at our doorstep.
3:58:30
Our community sits on second Avenue, adjacent to a bike lane that has become a major thoroughfare for e vehicle traffic, and the mere thought of widening this bike lane before any accountability measures actually terrifies me.
3:58:46
Every day, our elderly residents, visitors, family members, and care partners face real danger simply stepping outside of our front door.
3:58:59
The unregulated nature of evhecles often traveling at high speeds, going the wrong way, listening to AirPods, checking their phone, Deliveristas, city bikers, anyone who's commuting on an e vehicle, this danger this is a danger that poses a significant threat to the safety of our community and older adults.
3:59:21
We are unable to simply navigate our own sidewalks, and I can tell you as an experienced clinician, a fall from the impact of an e vehicle would more often than not kill an older adult.
3:59:34
As a cyclist and someone who commutes to work myself on an e vehicle, I fully support 606.
3:59:40
I would gladly register and identify myself as an e vehicle commuter in New York City and be held accountable.
3:59:46
Trust me.
3:59:47
It's scary out there.
3:59:50
I believe accountability is essential for ensuring the safe coexistence.
3:59:55
Accountability matters.
3:59:57
Accountability changes behavior.
3:59:59
For the safety and well-being of our city and each other, I urge you to pass 606, please.
4:00:05
Something has to be done.
4:00:07
Thank you.
