Commissioner Cumbo proposes organizing a creative job workforce fair to connect young people with cultural institutions and showcase various career opportunities in the arts sector.

  • The fair would bring together various cultural providers in one place
  • Young people would have the opportunity to learn about different programs and career paths
  • Cumbo emphasizes the importance of exposure to diverse opportunities in shaping career choices

And I'm gonna take it one step further, and I know my agency is gonna jump all over me after I say this.
0:44:17
But just reading the testimony, hearing the questions, seeing all of the providers here, I would love for our agency to be able to do, creative job workforce fair.
0:44:31
And something where we gather all of these great partners in one room.
0:44:36
We invite young people from all over New York City to be able to meet and engage and talk with so many of these cultural providers.
0:44:44
So that they can really learn about these different programs.
0:44:48
Because, like it was said, some are ballet programs, some are STEAM programs, some are STEM programs, some are focused on horticulture, some, you know, and when you're 15, 16 years old, you don't necessarily know where exactly you want to be.
0:45:06
For me, I was a student at Brooklyn Tech and so that opportunity to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art came through that particular school.
0:45:15
And so, it's important for us to partner with DOE to get the word out, but I would love to see something where young people have the ability to actually talk with those cultural institutions because, I don't know, maybe if I had seen the ballet program, I would have been a famous ballerina.
0:45:34
That's just in my mind.
0:45:35
My mom's probably joking and laughing at home about that.
0:45:38
But, I was happy that I was able to be at the Met.
0:45:41
But who knows, if I had been a part of the program with STEAM I might have been a scientist.
0:45:47
But, you kind of go with what you're exposed to, and so it would be great for them to see all of the different kinds of, institutions from roundabout and seeing about lighting and engineering and technical experience.
0:46:03
Our young people could do so many things if they had the right connection and exposure.
0:46:07
So when I get back and my agency asks me who's gonna do all the work to get that together, I'm gonna say I'm doing it in partnership with council member Carlina Rivera.
Carlina Rivera
0:46:17
Well, I, you know, I don't shy away from work.
0:46:19
I love that.
0:46:20
But I'll tell you, I think I think you just sent said something that's really important.
0:46:25
It's, like, it's the stability, I think, that all people are also attracted to, especially in a city this expensive, I think a creative job fair is is a great idea.
0:46:36
I think a lot of groups, what they wanna do is they wanna have as many people working for them as possible.
0:46:41
And sometimes the issue is is ensuring that the people that exist within the organization itself are being paid a living war wage.
0:46:47
Right?
0:46:47
So you wanna get these organizations stable.
0:46:49
It's a very difficult time for them right now.
0:46:52
Private fundraising, has proven to be very, very difficult at the moment.
0:46:57
And so the the the private the public private partnerships are so important, as you mentioned, that we brought them into a lot of these programs.
0:47:05
So I think I think one thing that we wanna do to start is to is to hear we're gonna hear from these groups today.
0:47:12
I wanna pick another I wanna create another opportunity to hear from you all again, to really figure out, like, is is this creative job fair, like, is this a good idea?
0:47:23
What else can we do?
0:47:24
Funding's always gonna be at the top of the list.
0:47:26
There's no question.
0:47:27
And you should mention that every single time.
0:47:29
And they will.
0:47:29
Right?
0:47:29
They always do, as you should, because you are deserving.
0:47:34
But I love that.
0:47:35
I would love for for, you know, someone from, you know, a a very, like, working class, even low income neighborhood to say, yeah.
0:47:44
I could I could do an internship, a paid internship
UNKNOWN
0:47:47
Mhmm.
Carlina Rivera
0:47:47
At a museum, and and then you never know, what could lead from that.
0:47:52
You know, there's so many different types of jobs, especially.
0:47:56
Are you providing education and resources?
0:48:00
We we talked about museum operations, but there's also things like copyright and licensing and protecting elect intellectual property, especially for emerging artists.
0:48:10
Are you all providing education or resources about that?
