Liz Vladeck explains the Department of Education's efforts to inform families about the June 1st filing requirement for special education services. Council Member Rita Joseph asks follow-up questions about stakeholder engagement.

  • The DOE has posted guidance on their website
  • They are communicating with the committee of non-public schools
  • The department is relying on private schools to help spread the word
  • Direct contact is being made with families via email or mail
  • Vladeck notes that the majority of affected families did comply with the requirement

So let me take the second part of that or sort of the middle part of that question first.
0:49:07
As deputy chancellor Foti noted, we've undertaken extensive efforts to make sure that everyone is aware of the June 1st filing requirement.
0:49:17
There's a guidance on our website.
0:49:19
We are talking about it with our committee of non public schools.
0:49:22
Frankly, we rely on the public on the private schools where there are a lot of kids with ISPs to spread the word.
0:49:28
They have much more direct access to

the community.
0:49:31
Engagements as well?
0:49:32
Yes.
0:49:32
Are you reaching out to stakeholders, making sure they are aware?
Liz Vladeck
0:49:35
Absolutely.
0:49:36
And we are, as DC Foti said, working to directly contact every family that we heard from this year.
0:49:43
If we have an email address for them, that's what we're using.
0:49:46
If we don't, we're relying on snail mail.
0:49:49
But I also do wanna come back to the the data, which showed us that the overwhelming majority of families to whom this applies did understand the requirement and did comply with it.
0:50:04
That doesn't relieve the stress for a family that didn't meet the deadline in trying to get their students served.
0:50:11
We understand that, which is why we're providing services notwithstanding the lack of timely filing.
0:50:18
In terms of your question about cost of this policy change, now that it's abundantly clear to the whole world that this deadline exists, I don't expect it the June 1st deadline, I don't expect it to save us any money at all.
0:50:34
The more cases that we receive a notice for, the more cases we will be legally obligated to, provide for.
Rita Joseph

So you don't you don't have a number as of yet that how much this gonna cost?
