Council Member De La Rosa inquires about metrics and monitoring systems in place to assess the likelihood of fire reignition, noting that the Inwood Hill Park fire continued to reignite over about 5 days. Chief Esposito explains the FDNY's approach to preventing reignition and their monitoring procedures.

  • FDNY aims to put enough water on fires to prevent reignition
  • Brush fires can sometimes spread beyond the perceived containment area
  • FDNY leaves a 'watch line' with a company at the scene to monitor for flare-ups
  • If fires flare up, the watch line calls for additional companies to return and extinguish the fire

Okay.
1:15:10
What metrics or monitoring systems are in place to assess the likelihood of the fire reigniting?
1:15:15
Because that's something we saw here.
1:15:17
The fire continued to reignite, across about 5 days.
John Esposito

So, ideally, we would, put enough water on that fire to to put it out so that it doesn't reignite.
1:15:31
But as you see with brush fires, they they spread sometimes, further behind beyond the containment area that that we realize it is, and continues to burn that we don't realize that.

Okay.
1:15:43
So there isn't, like, a monitoring system in place?
John Esposito
1:15:46
We we we do leave a watch line, a a company there, and and for Inwood, that's what we had done.
1:15:52
And then as the fire flared up, they called more companies back, for us to continue to, to fight and extinguish that fire.
