Council Member Brewer inquires about how DOI assesses whether the police department's use of new surveillance technologies complies with the POST Act. Commissioner Strauber explains their approach to staying informed about new technologies.
- DOI has requested updates from the department on new technologies, which is included in one of the proposed bills
- Timely updates would enable DOI to identify and assess new technologies
- Public reporting and announcements by the department also help DOI stay informed about new technology deployments
- The discussion highlights the challenges of keeping up with rapidly evolving surveillance technologies

The I'm wanting to know how your agency assesses whether the police department's use of new surveillance technology.

The drones are pretty new, they're changing all the time, facial recognition changing all the time, complies with the post act because there is often new surveillance technologies.

Right.

Well, one of the things that we've requested and that is, in one of the bills you're considering today is a requirement that the department provide us with updates as to new technology.
0:41:59
So on whatever schedule we might receive those, receiving those in a timely manner will enable us to identify new technologies.
0:42:07
And so that's one way that we're able to to sort of stay on top or that we would be able to stay on top of that.
0:42:12
There's also, you know, often public reporting and announcements that the department makes when it deploys new technologies.
0:42:18
That's certainly been the case with the ones that we've looked at in the last two reports.
