Council Member Jumaane Williams questions NYPD officials about the potential impact of eliminating the gang database on collaborative policing efforts, particularly the Ceasefire program. He challenges the assertion that the program would have to stop if the database were eliminated.

  • Williams questions how eliminating the database would stop collaborative policing if information isn't shared
  • NYPD officials explain that the database informs who is included in Ceasefire actions
  • Williams points out that other agencies have successfully shared information about high-risk individuals without a centralized database
  • He cites Project Restore as an example of effective information sharing leading to reduced gun violence
Jumaane Williams
2:29:39
Okay.
2:29:40
I believe deputy commissioner Gerber testified that we don't share information from that database.
2:29:45
So, how would it stop if the information is not shared?
Michael LiPetri
2:29:47
We we do not share.
Jumaane Williams
2:29:50
So how would that impact the collaborative policing of ceasefire?
Michael LiPetri
2:29:53
It's who the department, the NYPD Sure.
2:29:57
Will actually put into a cease fire

action.
Jumaane Williams
2:30:01
Yes.
2:30:01
Which means But, wait, wait.
Michael LiPetri
2:30:03
I didn't finish.
Jumaane Williams
2:30:03
So, but, no, no, because we said they don't share, but they are still wait, they are still able to put them into those programs.
2:30:09
So, my question before was, why are we not able to do that in many different ways?
2:30:14
You don't have to necessarily share it in the way you're talking about to be able to get the resources to the individual.
2:30:20
And, just to be clear, the DA and Project Restore actually shared information about who they thought would be the most violent folks and they shared them into programs that were not led by law enforcement and had a precipitous drop in gun violence.
Michael Gerber
2:30:34
So just just so we're clear, so there's no confusion.
