Council Member Shahana Hanif inquires about the city's efforts to educate the broader population about TGNCNB rights and inclusivity. Ronald Porcelli outlines various initiatives and resources available.

  • Updated information on TGNCNBI resources and rights on the Unity Project website
  • Emphasis on educating people about their rights, especially in times of crisis
  • City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) continues to educate through various means
  • CCHR has a transgender community liaison and an LGBTQ+ lead advisor
  • Ongoing community engagement, trainings, and response to bias incidents

Got it.
0:49:59
And then I know you you know this is a comprehensive breakdown of how our city agencies are ensuring inclusivity of the trans community and ways to expand protections within each agency.
0:50:17
Is the city doing what is the city doing in terms of just the broader population of New York City as we're listening to fear mongering rhetoric from Trump to including our leaders here.
0:50:33
How are we not just specifically looking at how looking to ensure that trans people receive the care they receive, but how are we also making sure that New Yorkers know that this is a city where we welcome trans people, this is a city where we know not to violate a trans person's rights, like what are we doing to like push that home?

Can you clarify, you speaking like writ large?
0:51:04
Writ large.
0:51:05
Are you speaking for the TGNCMB community specifically with that question?
0:51:10
Yeah.
0:51:10
Okay.
0:51:12
So definitely with regards to the TGNC MBI resources and rights, that is a new update that was made on the Unity Project website.
0:51:23
We will continue to find ways to share that out and educate for people.
0:51:28
It can be challenging when you're faced with some particular crisis.
0:51:33
Sometimes you don't know what to do and you face something that is particularly emotional.
0:51:38
It's challenging to navigate.
0:51:40
So we have that information there available.
0:51:42
As I previously mentioned, I think it is absolutely important that people know your rights and familiarize yourself with your rights.
0:51:50
That information is available online.
0:51:52
CCHR continues to educate on this and I think that is more salient than ever.
0:51:57
They have a transgender community liaison.
0:52:01
They also have an LGBTQ plus lead advisor.
0:52:04
And so they're constantly engaging and that is in a number of different trainings, but also in response to bias incidents, community organizing.
0:52:13
There's an upcoming LGBTQ plus Iftar where they will at one point also be celebrating, but then also educating people and showing how they can access these sorts of resources.
0:52:24
So all of that work is ongoing and if anything it is ramping up.
0:52:28
These are obviously challenging times writ large.
0:52:31
So in response to that, we're getting to work.
