Council Member Rita Joseph raises concerns about language access in schools and immigrant services, particularly in light of potential changes to language policies. Deputy Commissioner Lorena Lucero explains MOIA's approach to addressing language needs in schools.

  • MOIA is working with the Department of Education to address language access
  • The Department of Education is providing support to tailor services to specific schools and linguistic needs
  • MOIA is partnering with contracted providers to meet language requirements in schools

Okay.
1:29:30
And is language access going to be available as well?
1:29:33
Because there was also another executive order saying the only English the only language of the land should be English, but we are a multi language city.

So how we're gonna address that and navigate that space as well?
Lorena Lucero
1:29:44
Great question.
1:29:46
We are working with the Department of Education.
1:29:48
Part of why we're partnering with the Department of Education is not only to reach that particular community and families and children as we know are very important, they are also providing support and supporting our contracted providers who might not speak the language to tailor it to the specific schools and linguistic needs that are found there.
