Commissioner, TPS has been reduced from eighteen months to twelve months for Haitian nationals.
1:30:14
How are we addressing that and how are we providing support for the Haitian community and all those that will be impacted with them taking away TPS which is a protective status and if you're watching the news lately, Haiti is not the greatest place someone wants to go right now.
1:30:30
So, what are we doing to protect our most vulnerable communities?
1:30:33
As you may know, New York City itself has the highest rates of TPS recipients and 500,000 of them are Haitian.
1:30:44
So, I don't know, we gotta, I'd love to hear what the plan is.
Manuel Castro
1:30:49
Thank you to thank you council member.
1:30:52
As you know, I've expressed great concern about the elimination of these programs.
1:30:57
And to be clear, I, from the beginning, have expressed concern about the impacts of all these policy changes on our communities.
1:31:05
Anything that harms New Yorkers and our immigrant communities is something of concern to us.
1:31:12
And the revocation of TPS is certainly huge, huge worry.
1:31:18
We have been strong advocates for TPS, going back years now for to allow our immigrant communities have some some lens of stability, and this is just devastating.
1:31:32
We have a program specifically that works with Haitian immigrants.
1:31:38
As you know, the Haitian Response Initiative has been a key program for us.
1:31:46
Just like with every other policy change that's occurring at the federal level, we're monitoring.
1:31:51
We're trying to figure out exactly next steps.
1:31:56
Think do you want to weigh

in?
Manuel Castro
1:31:57
But it is it is concerning that our people that our community members would have would have lost work authorization and legal status.
Rita Joseph
1:32:07
Right.
1:32:07
That that means unemployed folks once their work permit expires, and it's not only TPS, right, and if we look at it it's also humanitarian parole.
1:32:16
These folks, their work permits will not be renewed, so here's again a workforce that'll be out of work, what do we do?
