Council Member Eric Dinowitz inquires about CUNY application fees and the potential cost of eliminating them for all New York City residents. CUNY officials provide information on current fee waiver programs and their impact.

  • CUNY's application fee is $65 for first-year students and $70 for transfer students
  • CUNY receives $2,100,000 in baseline funding for application fee waivers
  • Recent CUNY month initiative waiving application fees has led to a significant increase in applications
  • An additional $2,100,000 would be needed to waive fees for the increased number of applicants (65,000) due to recent initiatives
Eric Dinowitz
1:02:24
Okay.
1:02:26
I'm gonna ask one more question and turn it over to my colleague, council member Wessler.
1:02:31
After the okay.
1:02:35
Application fees are a barrier for many who apply to college.
1:02:39
CUNY's application fee is 65 for first year students and $70 for transfer students.
1:02:47
How much would it cost to eliminate application fees for all New York City residents?
Sherif Soliman
1:02:55
Well for all New York City residents we'd have to do that calculation and come back to you.
1:02:59
What I can say is that currently and we're grateful for the baseline funding of $2,100,000 that CUNY receives for the application waivers.
1:03:11
We have seen and you have heard about CUNY month where we are waiving the application fees that our board of trustees has adopted.
1:03:20
And we've seen a considerable increase in the applications to CUNY paired with the fact that our chancellor and the DOE school's chancellor have been working together to personally visit classrooms and hand out personalized letters that basically say that CUNY has a place for you.
1:03:40
So based on the 65,000 I believe applications that we had received because of that uptick, we would need another 2,100,000 to waive the application fees for that number of applicants.
1:04:00
That's that's public back to.
Eric Dinowitz
1:04:02
Yeah.
1:04:02
That's for public school students, right, that you're talking about?
1:04:05
Okay.
1:04:06
I'm gonna turn it over to council member Ressler for some questions.
