Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga and Assistant Commissioner Carlos Ortiz address concerns about salary competitiveness and its potential impact on vacancy rates.
- DCWP aims to attract top talent but is bound by civil service title guidelines and allocated salaries
- The agency is open to conversations about potential changes in titles or salaries, which would involve DCAS
- DCWP focuses on other ways to attract and retain talent, including:
- Developing a positive agency culture
- Promoting the public service loan forgiveness program for city employees

Okay.

And are you concerned perhaps that given the vacancy rate that the salaries are not competitive?
0:29:33
Because that, I mean, it just seems like one of the obvious issues here.

Thank you.

Thank you, Chair.

I mean, it's certainly we want to attract top talent to our agency and the work that we do.
0:29:57
We are bound by the guidelines of civil service titles and what are the salaries that are allocated to those.
0:30:05
We will always, you know, be welcoming conversations about anything that needs to change in that respect.
0:30:12
I think we'll probably have to include DCAZ in those conversations as well for any changes in title.

I think there are also other ways that we have focused on on being able to get new talent and retain talent.
0:30:25
I think number one is the culture of the agency that we've developed over these past few years, even prior to that.

And also the public service loan forgiveness program that we're working on closely with DCAS to help city employees be able to work through that program and enroll and ultimately get student loan debt forgiven too.
