Dirk McCall de Paloma from Sunnyside Shines BID details the specific challenges and costs associated with implementing the new containerization rules in their district.

  • Estimates a cost of $60,000 for bins and an additional $50,000-$60,000 for extra staff
  • Highlights challenges in siting containers and getting buy-in from merchants and property owners
  • Emphasizes the need for a funding stream to help BIDs implement these changes

Okay.
2:04:58
Jump again.
2:04:58
So Sunnyside Shines, we're the bid in Sunnyside Queens.
2:05:02
We cover 36 block fronts.
2:05:05
So 12 blocks on Queens Blvd North And South and six blocks on Greenpoint Ave on both sides of the street.
2:05:11
So we we do about 80 bags of trash a day, and it's a very heavily restaurant and food corridor.
2:05:18
So my trash cans are overflowing on a regular basis and have to be emptied on a regular basis.
2:05:24
I'm going to have to probably buy five containers, five large containers, and then I have to work on the siting.
2:05:30
Nobody wants a container in front of their place.
2:05:32
So I've had a walk through with Department of Sanitation.
2:05:34
They're working very closely with us trying to make sure that we find places that we can site this, that the merchants aren't gonna basically say, why are you doing this to my business?
2:05:42
And the property owners aren't gonna be complaining.
2:05:44
It's gonna cost me 60,000 for the bins themselves.
2:05:48
But then I have to pay an extra staff member because my staff right now are already overextended.
2:05:52
We contract with a with a supplemental sanitation service.
2:05:55
But in order to take all the bags and put them in the containers and make sure they're still doing everything else, I'm probably going to have to get an extra person.
2:06:03
And this is a unionized position, so it's probably 50,000 to 60,000 more.
2:06:07
So probably at least 120,000 in order to comply with this.
2:06:10
And we want to comply with this.
2:06:12
And I think there have been some references to the program the Department of Sanitation had earlier where they would make a purchase of can for you, of the bins for you, and then install it.
2:06:22
That program doesn't exist anymore.
2:06:24
Now they want us to come up with the money.
2:06:25
And we adopt our budget like everybody else at the beginning of the fiscal year or right before the fiscal year starts.
2:06:30
Adding an extra $120,000 when my budget, when my assessment is $360,000 This is really challenging.
2:06:38
We all want containerization.
2:06:39
We don't want the rats.
2:06:41
But we have to have a funding stream that's going to be able to help us do this.
Chris Walters
2:06:47
I'm not a bid, so I can't speak to this piece.
2:06:50
But again, say, I think we're here to lift up some of the other programs that SBS does, especially around industrial and then the small merchant work.
