Acting Commissioner Javier Lojan discusses the funding approach for expanded litter basket service, addressing concerns about year-to-year funding versus baseline funding.

  • Lojan acknowledges the effectiveness of the expanded service but doesn't directly address why baseline funding isn't implemented.
  • He expresses willingness to work with the council and administration on funding for future years.
  • Council Member Abreu emphasizes the importance of prioritizing litter basket service in the budget process.
  • Abreu requests information on the cost needed to cover twice-a-day, six-day-a-week service for litter baskets citywide.

So chair, as you know, this is a very creative agency.

We'll always try to develop new efficient processes, but there's, you know, there are some issues when you could really only do more and more while we understand that this is part of the negotiation process, what I can say is that we just look forward to working with counsel and administration on on that funding for the out years.
0:45:23
But as you mentioned this has been the service has been effective and we will look to making those adjustments where you know you're seeing lapses or lowered levels of service where they're needed.
Shaun Abreu

Yeah I mean look when when I speak to my voters in my district you know I go to events and I tell them you know we can't take for granted these litter baskets but I feel like our city government you know in most part I think I would have say from the mayor's side hasn't made this a priority for baseline funding.
0:45:52
But this is something that we have to you know fight for year to year and we take our litter baskets and the servicing of those litter baskets, a lot of us take it for granted and because we think that that's something that's just gonna appear automatically.
0:46:05
But the truth is that the budget process doesn't reflect, doesn't reflect that and so that is something that we need to I think prioritize in this year's budget and truly baseline our litter basket service.
0:46:19
What would be what amount would we think would be needed to cover the original 10 of this bill, right, which was for twice a week, six day a week service for litter baskets but it was later discovered that the additional funding will not cover that.
0:46:32
What is the amount needed to cover this expanded service of twice a day, six day a week service for litter baskets?
Javier Lojan
0:46:46
So what I don't have that exact number.
0:46:50
Sometimes we don't there's areas that we don't believe need two time a week service two time a day service.
0:46:56
Sorry.
0:46:57
We just believe in equitable service.
0:46:59
So those are the areas where we look to make adjustments on and work with, you know, council members and the committee on on making those proper adjustments when necessary.
