Council Member Avilés inquires about DCWP's process for determining where to direct immigrant victims of fraud services. Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga explains the agency's approach to assessing cases and making referrals.

  • DCWP considers whether they can handle the case or if another agency already has an open case
  • The agency respects individuals' information and preferences when making referrals
  • DCWP typically works through their sister agency in the city for referrals
  • The agency is open to exploring more avenues of assistance for New Yorkers

There's a lot wrong and it's not new information which is the incredibly irritating and responsible thing of this whole mess.
1:03:59
How does DCWP determine where an immigrant who's a victim of victim services fraud is directed to?
1:04:08
So is it to provider?
1:04:10
When does it go to let's say the Office of New Americans or the AGs?
1:04:15
Like what's the assessment of how you direct people?
Vilda Vera Mayuga
1:04:22
Thank you, Charlie.
1:04:23
I want to make sure I understood correctly.
1:04:25
If it's not responding, obviously let me know.
1:04:27
Know
UNKNOWN
1:04:27
you're All good.
Vilda Vera Mayuga
1:04:28
But I think so if it's somebody who needs services, which I think can happen I think both can happen, I guess maybe is what I'm trying to say, right?
1:04:36
If it's a case that we identify and we're like, you know what?
1:04:40
It's not going to be much that we can do or another government agency already has an open case related to a particular immigration service provider, then we would suggest that that individual goes that way.
1:04:53
We wouldn't do it without speaking with the individual because we're going to respect that person's information and who they reach out to initially.
1:05:01
If they need services, we heard your feedback.
1:05:05
So we're going to be looking at that to make sure that they are connected with a proper legal services provider.
1:05:13
The Office for New Americans, you know, they have their own hotline for similar providers.
1:05:19
But my understanding is that it's two separate countries.
1:05:21
I used to oversee the Office for New Americans at The States.
1:05:24
I had some knowledge there.
1:05:25
But I don't know how they potentially make changes.
1:05:29
So we generally do go through our sister agency in the city.
1:05:35
And if there's other coordination of course we can continue to pursue that so there's more avenues of assistance for these New Yorkers.
