I proudly vote aye for Julie Menon.
1:07:17
I'm deeply proud to be here today in this chamber with all of you, ready to begin the work the people of New York City sent us here to do.
1:07:24
Today feels like the culmination of a long journey of service, not just for me, but for so many who have dedicated their lives to your communities, your boroughs, and to our city.
1:07:33
It is a big day for many of us, especially our soon to be newly elected speaker, Julie Menon, who I'm proud to serve under and look forward to calling my speaker.
1:07:42
Julie Menon has been a resolute voice for progress, forged coalition amongst her colleagues, and bridged gaps, finding common ground across differences in our vast ideological spectrum.
1:07:54
Her steadfast commitment to her values, her colleagues, and community will usher in what is truly shaping up to be a new era for our city.
1:08:02
An era rooted in competence and collaboration driven by results for New Yorkers.
1:08:08
While today is certainly a high point, it is also just the beginning.
1:08:12
I'm eagerly looking forward to the work ahead.
1:08:14
I rode the Ford train down to City Hall today, and I cannot help think about the neighbors that I represent in District 17 who made something very clear when they elected me as their representative in this council.
1:08:25
They issued a mandate.
1:08:27
They elected a leader who will ensure that they are treated with the same dignity afforded to residents in every corner of our city.
1:08:34
A leader who will fight to make sure the South Bronx receives the resources it deserves.
1:08:39
One who knows and will ensure that all of their colleagues know that The Bronx is not just an afterthought, but a vital part of the fabric that makes New York City the cultural capital of the world.
1:08:50
And above all, my neighbors want to see their quality of life improve.
1:08:53
That means safer streets, cleaner blocks, and a government that shows up and delivers.
1:08:58
And yes, sometimes that starts with a very simple idea, like cleaning the damn streets.
1:09:03
I like to be excused for cursing in this chamber.
1:09:05
And while those four simple words are simple, the work will not always be.
1:09:10
In the next four years, we have a lot of opportunities and a lot to get done.
1:09:13
I look forward to putting my agenda into action under the guidance of our speaker, turning theory into practice, and working alongside each of my colleagues to accomplish the work ahead and build stronger communities across our city.
1:09:24
Thank you.
