In the 1960s, significant community development initiatives were launched in Bedford-Stuyvesant, including the formation of the first federally funded community development corporation in the country.
- Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council lobbied Senator Robert F. Kennedy
- Bedford-Stuyvesant Development and Service Corporation was formed
- Focused on restoration work carried out by local men learning skilled trades
- 485 Willoughby Avenue and 5 adjoining row houses were restored as part of this program

In the late or in the 19 sixties, the Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council lobbied Senator Robert F Kennedy to visit Bedford Stuyvesant and worked with his staff to form the 1st federally funded community development corporation in the country.
