In the 1960s, significant community development initiatives were launched in Bedford-Stuyvesant, including the formation of the first federally funded community development corporation in the country.

  • Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council lobbied Senator Robert F. Kennedy
  • Bedford-Stuyvesant Development and Service Corporation was formed
  • Focused on restoration work carried out by local men learning skilled trades
  • 485 Willoughby Avenue and 5 adjoining row houses were restored as part of this program
