- CBOs now have access to applicant information earlier in the process
- This allows CBOs to contact families ahead of time and conduct parent orientations
- Council members emphasize the importance of early engagement with families
- Discussion of the challenges CBOs face in managing enrollment and outreach while running the program

So before so much that, this is something I would like the way I could to please attest her as well.
0:47:42
The CBOs are already rich Oh, I'm
Althea V. Stevens
0:47:44
aware what the CBOs is doing.
0:47:46
That's not the issue here.
Angela Faloye
0:47:47
So but we want to give leeway.
0:47:49
We want to give leeway to families to say, you know, we understand.
0:47:52
And that 1st week also includes a holiday.
0:47:55
It includes July 4th Which
Althea V. Stevens
0:47:57
is part of some of the issue too?
Angela Faloye
0:47:59
Yeah.
0:47:59
So we're giving that leeway to families.
0:48:01
But, again, by Monday, before that first Monday, I'm sure the civil and schools are already calling the family.
Althea V. Stevens
0:48:08
That's right.
0:48:08
So I just because this even with this piece, I think, is where the some of the frustration comes from.
0:48:13
Like, I was like, when the CDOs ran camp, they they would have their orientation probably like a week before.
0:48:20
And so they would already have, like, a more of an idea.
0:48:23
And so when we're already in the thick of camp, do you know how hard it is to have to sit there and call parents when you have these kids all day.
0:48:31
Like, so I think even that process of saying we're waiting until the 2nd Monday to do that is part of an issue.
0:48:38
Right?
0:48:38
Like, because, again, if campers already started, We've worked it's already after the holiday.
0:48:43
People are going away.
0:48:44
You've already made accommodations.
0:48:46
I'm not coming.
0:48:47
And so that just and so, again, you everyone knows I said it for the last 3 years.
0:48:52
I ran camp for 20 years.
0:48:54
There was no way by the time camp started, I had the ability to actually say I'm gonna go call off the wait list because my roster needs to be done.
0:49:06
And so we would have our rosters done, had pairing of orientation, at least 2 weeks before met the parents came in.
0:49:14
So do we see where that that piece is missing, which is why I've advocated that we put the recruitment and enrollment back in the hands of the CBOs so that would not be in this position.
0:49:25
Because that Monday does not make sense, and that is not fair because we all know that the teachers and principals aren't making those calls.
0:49:33
It is the CEOs making those calls.
0:49:35
So that is not okay.
Daniel Guillén
0:49:37
So good good morning chair.
Althea V. Stevens
0:49:38
So You're about to you're about to take up for them.
Jumaane Williams
0:49:40
Go ahead.
Rita C. Joseph
0:49:40
Could you give me one sec can you give me one second?
0:49:42
So can you give me one second?
0:49:43
Yes.
0:49:44
Let me acknowledge council member Menin and council member Hanif who's on Zoom.
0:49:48
And you may take it away, but I'm gonna come back with a follow-up just to line up so New York City Public Schools get ready for me.
Daniel Guillén
0:49:55
So, you know, I wanna highlight the fact that you chair Stevens last year flagged this for me and and plan thing for this year, we wanted to be more intentional about the application process.
0:50:06
Right?
0:50:06
And what that meant was that CBOs were able to get access to who was applying.
0:50:10
So that way they can see the contact information, they can call those parents ahead and say, hey, we do a parent orientation come up.
0:50:17
Are you gonna join us?
0:50:18
Are you gonna be part of this?
0:50:19
That way, we can work through that wait list because that is correct.
0:50:22
It is a key component of what happens in the application process.
Althea V. Stevens
0:50:25
Can I tell you one of the things that I got from parents this summer?
