Council Member Rita Joseph inquired about the South Bronx Literacy Academy and its expansion plans. DOE representatives provided the following information:
- The South Bronx Literacy Academy currently has 6 sections in grades 2 through 4
- The school is grading up annually
- There are plans to open a Central Brooklyn Literacy Academy in September
- The Central Brooklyn Literacy Academy is planned to be housed in P.S. 394
- The new academy is intended to serve students in grades 2 through 8 overall
- It will start with 3 classes in the first year
- There is an upcoming vote at the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) regarding the new academy
Council Member Joseph raised concerns about the accessibility of the P.S. 394 building for students with mobility issues. The DOE representatives acknowledged this concern and stated they would note it with their partners working on the project.
