FDNY Chief John Esposito responds to Council Member Krishnan's question about lessons learned from recent brush fires. He focuses on the department's realization of equipment needs and placement for more effective brush fire response.

  • FDNY identified a need for more brush fire apparatus in areas like Van Cortlandt Park and Inwood Park
  • The department is considering smaller, more agile apparatus for navigating park pathways
  • Plans to expand the use of forestry hose to all engine companies for more appropriate brush fire response

Thank you for that question.

So one of the things we realized, is the brush fire apparatus that we have.
0:29:22
So we currently have, 10 or 12 situated in the city, mostly in the areas that historically have had the most brush fires, South Queens, South Brooklyn, and and Staten Island.
0:29:35
We realize that we don't have, many of them situated up where we had some of our fires this year up in Van Cortlandt Park and Inwood Park.
0:29:44
And there's different types of crossfire apparatus that that we could use as well.
0:29:49
So, we're in the process of looking into smaller, more agile apparatus that can get in down those pathways in the city parks that would allow us to get, water and stretch stretch hose lines quicker.
0:30:05
Additionally, many of our engine companies carry forestry hose, which is, smaller in diameter than than the regular hose we use for building fires and we would look to expand that to all of our engine companies.
0:30:20
So, that that's more appropriate for this type of, for this type of fire.
