Council Member Chi Osse inquires about the various scenarios in which the NYPD deploys drones. Michael Eichner, Commanding Officer of the Drone Team, explains that drones are used in situations such as flood incidents, building collapses, beach patrols, missing child cases, and traffic incidents.

  • Drones are deployed as force multipliers to assist ground units
  • NYPD policy prohibits the use of drones for general surveillance
  • Drones are not deployed for basic surveillance purposes

In the first part, I wanna ask about deployment.

I know that you spoke about the deployment of drones when it came to to protests, but could you go more in-depth in terms of other instances when drones are deployed depending on the investigation?

1:46:01
Good morning.
1:46:02
I could speak a little bit to how we deploy drones within the department.
1:46:07
For example, if there was a flood incident, a building collapse, we've deployed them at building collapses.
1:46:13
We deploy them on our beaches, four New York City beaches.
1:46:18
A missing child, a traffic incident, things that nature.
1:46:25
We've anywhere where we think it could be a force multiplier and assist our units on the ground.
1:46:30
If a drone is capable of assisting them, we'll we'll deploy the drone.
Chi Osse
1:46:34
Are there other instances where drones are just deployed for basic surveillance?
1:46:41
No.
1:46:42
